"Good to Great"
Mark 1:29-30
Passage Mark 1:29-30:
Jesus Heals Many People
29 After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home.
30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away.
Key Verses: Very early, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to looking for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" (35-36)
1. We are called to PROTECT our families (29-31)
2. We are called to PROVIDE for those in need. (32-34)
3. Our PRIMARY calling is obeying God's PURPOSE for our lives. (35-39)
Priorities of Life
1. God
2. Family

"Friendship with the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:16-18
Passage Galatians 5:16-18:
Living by the Spirit’s Power
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
1. The PRESENCE of the Holy Spirit is conditional.
2. The Holy Spirit works in those with PURE hearts.
3. The POWER of the Holy Spirit is conditional.
Are you a friend or foe of the Holy Spirit?
"Cotton Candy Faith"
Hebrews 11:1-6
Passage Hebrews 11:1-6:
Hebrews 11
Great Examples of Faith
1 Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
2 Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.
3 By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.
4 It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.
5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
Faith is based on FACT and not fiction
Faith eliminates FEAR and fosters trust
Faith comes through FRIENDSHIP with God
Cotton candy is sweet and convenient, but will fall apart in a harsh environment.
Don't Forget"
Psalm 103:2
Passage Psalm 103:2:
2 Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
"Treasures of Darkness"
Isaiah 45:3
Psalm 139:12
Passage Isaiah 45:3:
3 And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—
secret riches.
I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord,
the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.
Passage Psalm 139:12:
12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
Darkness = Times when you don't see God, you feel alone, like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling.
Earthquakes = When everything you count on, believe in, has been shaken or is being shaken.
We don't need to fear the darkness and earthquakes!
Healthy Self-Esteem
Philippians 4:10-13
Passage Philippians 4:10-13:
Paul’s Thanks for Their Gifts
10 How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me.
11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.
12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.
13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
1 Healthy relationships invest in friendships, but DYSFUCTIONAL relationships perpetualte failure.
(10-11)
2. Outer circumstances should not DICTATE self-esteem or contentment (12)
3. Our strength is DERIVED from Christ and Christian friends (13)
Are you proud of your disfunctionalism, or are you becoming healthy in your relationship with Christ and with others?
Three steps towards healthy self-esteem:
1. Understand that you are both valuable and sick.
2. Surround yourself with healthy relationships.
3. Have Christ clean and empower you through constant communication.
Keeping the Faith
Judges 16:15-22
Passage Judges 16:15-22:
15 Then Delilah pouted, “How can you tell me, ‘I love you,’ when you don’t share your secrets with me? You’ve made fun of me three times now, and you still haven’t told me what makes you so strong!”
16 She tormented him with her nagging day after day until he was sick to death of it.
17 Finally, Samson shared his secret with her. “My hair has never been cut,” he confessed, “for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.”
18 Delilah realized he had finally told her the truth, so she sent for the Philistine rulers. “Come back one more time,” she said, “for he has finally told me his secret.” So the Philistine rulers returned with the money in their hands.
19 Delilah lulled Samson to sleep with his head in her lap, and then she called in a man to shave off the seven locks of his hair. In this way she began to bring him down, and his strength left him.
20 Then she cried out, “Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!”
When he woke up, he thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But he didn’t realize the Lord had left him.
21 So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison.
22 But before long, his hair began to grow back.
1. Samson SET APART to God fom Birth "Because you will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head, because the boy is a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines." (5)
2. Samson had supernatural STRENGTH to defend his people and to defeat the enemy.
3. Samson became SELF-SUFFICIENT and sensual as a leader (17-22)
The United States is great because of God, but if she leaves God to impress her worldly lovers, she will have her eyes gouged out and walk in darkness.
